Screening Exams

Coronary CTA

Regional Radiology is proud to announce the availability of Coronary CTA. Coronary CTA is the newest exam revolutionizing the diagnosis of heart disease. After being featured on the cover of "Time Magazine" and on the "Oprah Show," the question is no longer whether a Cardiac CT Angiography (Cardiac CTA) is ready for PrimeTime.
The question is, where can I get one?

Most people with heart disease don't know they have heart disease until they have a cardiac event - The first symptom may be a
heart attack.

With our new 64 slice CT scanner, we can now provide this new non-invasive study for evaluation of coronary arteries. This exam can help detect coronary arteriosclerosis (plaque in the arteries of the heart) before it has a chance to do irreversible harm. By detecting calcium deposits in the artery walls, the Siemens Sensation 64-Slice High Definition Heart Scan can detect the presence of blockages in your coronary arteries that may not yet be severe enough to show up on other tests. Coronary CTA | Virtual Colonoscopy | Staten IslandCoronary CTA is the most sensitive non-invasive method currently available to accurately identify the presence of early coronary artery disease. The information obtained from the study can help your physician manage your care to prevent further damage should the test result in a positive finding. You may prevent an unplanned event. We encourage you to discuss the benefits of this test with your physician.

Our physicians meet the guidelines set by the ACR (American College of Radiology) and the ACC (American College of Cardiology) for the performance of Coronary CTA. Our staff of nurses and technologists have also been specialty trained to assist in these exams.

Are you or a family member or friend at risk for a Heart Attack?

Who should have a Coronary CTA:

  • Intermediate to high-risk profiles for coronary artery disease, but who do not have typical symptoms (especially chest pain, shortness of breath, or fatigue during heavy physical activity.
  • Unusual symptoms for coronary artery disease (such as chest pain unrelated to physical exertion), but low to intermediate risk profiles for coronary artery disease.
  • Unclear or inconclusive stress-test (treadmill test) results.
  • For these types of patients, coronary CTA can provide important insights to their primary physician into the extent and nature of plaque formation with or without any narrowing of the coronary arteries. Coronary CTA also can non-invasively exclude narrowing of the arteries as the cause of chest discomfort and detect other possible causes of symptoms.

*Some insurance(s) may not cover this test. However, given the important life-changing information this can provide, you may still want to have this test.

Virtual Colonoscopy: An Effective Screen for Colon Cancer

Virtual Colonoscopy is an effective screen for Colon Cancer. Colon cancer screening is one of the best ways to prevent colorectal cancer. In general, your risk of developing colon cancer increases as you age. If this is your only risk factor, you are considered "average risk." Other factors in your personal and family medical history may increase your risk. The simplest way for average-risk individuals to prevent colorectal cancer is to receive colon cancer screening beginning at age 50. If there's a tendency towards colon cancer in the family, as evidenced by a close relative with colon cancer, it's advised to start 10 years earlier.

Early detection can reduce the average person's risk of dying from colorectal cancer by 90%.

Regional Radiology is now offering 3D Virtual Colonoscopy. This new technique is an effective alternative to the traditional colonoscopy at finding polyps that are likely to become cancerous. Virtual colonoscopy is a technique that uses X-rays delivered through a CT scanner to take cross-sectional views through the abdomen, and then reconstruct those views in a special way using computer software. The result is a set of images that provide a radiologist with essentially the same sort of view of the colon as a gastroenterologist would have by doing an optical colonoscopy with a tube inserted into the colon. The exam is relatively quick, fairly sensitive, and only minimally invasive.

Virtual Colonoscopy is an excellent screening tool for those who want peace of mind without the need for anesthesia, extensive preps or invasive procedures.

Advantage of Virtual Colonoscopy

  • No sedation
  • Less invasive
  • Disposable supplies eliminating concerns for cross contamination
  • No risk of perforation
  • Minimal preparation

If all Americans were screened regularly, it would save 25,000 lives each year.
