Test Instructions


Fluoroscopy

Barium Enema: Patients should obtain a Fleet enema prep kit from a pharmacy or pick up a bowel cleansing kit from Regional Radiology 2 days prior to the exam.

GI Series/Small Bowel: NPO (nothing by mouth) after midnight.

Barium Swallow/Esophagram: NPO (nothing by mouth) after midnight.

I.V.P.: You will need to do the following:

  • Drink a 10 oz. bottle of Citrate of Magnesia at 6 p.m. the evening before
  • Eat a light dinner only
  • Drink 4-6 glasses of water between dinner and bedtime
  • NPO (nothing by mouth) until exam
  • Fill out the Iodinated Contrast Questionnaire

VCU: You will be screened for allergies - No preparation required.

HSG: You will be screened for allergies - No preparation required. Note: This exam should be performed 7-10 days after the start of the menstrual cycle.

Ultrasound

Pelvic Sonogram: Drink 40 oz. of water 1 hour prior to exam. Do not urinate.

Transvaginal Sonogram: Drink 40 oz. of water 1 hour prior to exam. Do not urinate.

Obstetric Sonogram (under 20 wks): Drink 40 oz. of water 1 hour prior to exam. Do not urinate.

Abdominal Sonogram: NPO (nothing by mouth) for 6 hrs. prior to exam.

Transrectal Sonogram: Patients should obtain a Fleet enema prep kit from a pharmacy and perform this 2 hrs. prior to the exam.

Prostate/Bladder Sonogram: Drink 40 oz. of water 1 hour prior to exam. Do not urinate.

Diagnostic Imaging

Mammography: Please fill out the Mammography History Form.

PET: NPO (nothing by mouth) except water after midnight. Diabetic patients should be scheduled for morning appointments and will be given further instructions at the time of scheduling. Please fill out the PET Scan Questionnaire.

CT (with contrast): NPO (nothing by mouth) except water after midnight. Diabetic patients should be scheduled for morning appointments and will be given further instructions at the time of scheduling. Please fill out the Iodinated Contrast Questionnaire.

MR/MRI: Please fill out the MR Screening Checklist.

MRCP: NPO (nothing by mouth) for 6 hrs. prior to exam. Also please fill out the MR Screening Checklist.

Bone Density: Please fill out the Bone Density Testing Questionnaire.

Nuclear Medicine

All Nuclear Medicine patients (cardiac, renal, etc.) should fill out the Nuclear Medicine Questionnaire.

HIDA Scan: NPO (nothing by mouth) for 6 hrs. prior to exam.

Meckels-Bowel Imaging: NPO (nothing by mouth) after midnight.

Gastric Emptying: NPO (nothing by mouth) for 6 hrs. prior to exam.

Thyroid Scan/Uptake: NPO (nothing by mouth) for 4 hrs. prior to pill. Patients should be off synthroid for 6 weeks.

Nuclear Cardiology

Thallium Stress Test: NPO (nothing by mouth) after midnight. Check with your physician about any medications you are taking.
